Jorge Ramos, the popular anchor of the nightly Univision News, talks with The Chronicle's Tyche Hendricks on the role of Latino voters in this year's presidential election and about the "distinguished citizen'' award he is receiving in San Francisco on Wednesday from the Commonwealth Club of California.
In the Bay Area, more adults 18 to 49 watch Ramos' newscast than any other evening network news show. The Spanish language Noticiero Univision reaches an audience of 44 million viewers nationally. Ramos has won eight Emmy Awards, has written several books and Time and People magazines have called him one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the United States.
He's treated as a rock star by his fans, but he's still largely unknown to English-speaking viewers.
In this podcast, Ramos gives his thoughts about immigration issues, the opportunities this country gave to him and his role as a journalist "giving voice to those who do not have a voice in the United States.''.
