MISS JUNETEENTH

It’s a date you most likely did not learn about in school.
Today across the United States, Black communities are celebrating Juneteenth. The holiday commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas learned about their freedom, almost two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is celebrated by nearly every state and D.C. Many are now also calling for it to be recognized as a national holiday.
We spoke to writer/director @cgpeoples and actor @alexischikaeze of the new @juneteenthmovie, a story about a struggling, single mother who signs her daughter up in their local “Miss Juneteenth” pageant.
The movie also stars @nikkibeharie and @kendrick38.
