Today across the United States, Black communities are celebrating Juneteenth. The holiday commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas learned about their freedom, almost two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is celebrated by nearly every state and D.C. Many are now also calling for it to be recognized as a national holiday.
We spoke to writer/director @cgpeoples and actor @alexischikaeze of the new @juneteenthmovie, a story about a struggling, single mother who signs her daughter up in their local “Miss Juneteenth” pageant.
The movie also stars @nikkibeharie and @kendrick38.
